Accurate information matters, especially before a mortgage application. If a report contains an error, identify the specific problem and gather evidence. A blanket dispute of every negative account is not a substitute for reviewing the facts.
Make the dispute specific
- Identify the account and the information you believe is wrong.
- Explain the correction you are requesting.
- Attach copies of relevant supporting records.
- Keep a copy of your submission and the response.
The CFPB recommends disputing errors with the credit-reporting company and the company that supplied the information. Examples include an account that is not yours, an incorrect balance, or a payment shown late when your records support otherwise.
Coordinate with the mortgage timeline
Tell your loan officer about pending disputes and share the results when available. Ask whether the lender needs the investigation completed or other documentation before continuing. A dispute does not establish that an account will be deleted, and a deadline for a house purchase does not guarantee an expedited outcome.
Start early enough to read the response and check the updated report. Bring unresolved factual questions to your credit review.
